Summary

The Manager, Fundamentals is responsible for managing the development of North American supply, demand, infrastructure, and price forecasting in support of trading, strategic investments, and risk management. The role will also manage developing best practices for modeling, reporting and analytics for the business unit.

Position Description

  • Analyze and identify emerging trends affecting short-, mid- and long-term congestion patterns across ISOs – particularly ISONE, NYISO, PJM, and ERCOT.
  • Build, maintain, and run zonal and nodal power dispatch models to support various groups across the company including commercial gas & power trading and asset development.
  • Provide power price forecasts, market drivers and related congestion impacts.
  • Forward view on generation, transmission, load and impact to power prices and heat rates.
  • Identifying market inefficiencies, price opportunities and strategies for the traders.
  • Track and disseminate major industry news, announcements, and regulatory actions that could impact market fundamentals.
  • Understand and explain drivers of forward curves and how/why they differ from internal POV.
  • Desire to be a part of a high performing and analytical team.
  • Prepare and deliver Quarterly Fundamentals update to senior leadership.
  • Help identify appropriate pricing locations and fundamentals around M&A transactions.

  • Strong knowledge of ISO topology, prevailing congestion patterns, and power plant dispatch, with a particular focus on ISONE, NYISO, PJM, and ERCOT.
  • Extensive experience with ISO datasets, particularly related to nodal LMPs and transmission topology.
  • Strong analytical thinking and modeling skills.
  • Ability to explain drivers of nodal basis and how they could evolve with changing infrastructure – transmission expansion, plant new build & retirements, etc.
  • Ability to communicate market views clearly, backed by quantitative analytics – explain the “why”.
  • Demonstrated ability to build models and analysis from the ground up without existing infrastructure, designing efficient and reliable processes.
  • Experience delivering Fundamentals Presentations to senior leadership, Board of Directors or appropriate Steering Committees.
  • Very strong Excel skills. Programming, database skills, or BI software experience a strong plus (SQL Server, Python, VBA, or R). Strong preference for experience with Python.
  • Experience with PLEXOS, PROMOD, AURORA or similar power dispatch model.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • A bachelor's degree in economics, engineering, finance, or related discipline.
  • 5 to 10 years of industry experience within power fundamental modeling in the North American markets at a utility, IPP, merchant trading firm or energy consulting firm
  • Strong power markets modeling experience.

 

Preferred Education and Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • Advanced degree preferred.
